North Seymour Island, located just north of Baltra in Ecuador’s Galápagos archipelago, is a compact but biologically rich destination known for its wildlife encounters. Though small in size, this flat, arid island punches far above its weight when it comes to natural spectacle, offering a rare chance to observe iconic species in a remarkably close setting.

The island’s rocky trails are often bustling with blue-footed boobies performing their unmistakable mating dance, complete with foot-stamping and sky-pointing. North Seymour is also one of the best places to witness the remarkable frigatebirds. During breeding season, males inflate their vivid red throat pouches like balloons to attract mates, creating one of the most vibrant displays in the islands.

While the birdlife steals the show above ground, the shoreline is equally lively. Sea lions lounge on the black lava rocks and playful marine iguanas bask in the sun, their spiny silhouettes blending with the volcanic terrain. Snorkeling just offshore may reveal rays, reef sharks, and colorful schools of fish navigating the clear Pacific waters.

Unlike some of the larger Galápagos islands, North Seymour isn’t inhabited and has no overnight facilities, making it a popular stop on guided day tours. Its accessibility and concentration of wildlife make it a favorite among naturalists and photographers.
