Cape Breton Island

Cape Breton Island sits off the eastern coast of Nova Scotia and welcomes visitors with rolling hills, wide waters and a calendar full of engaging experiences. In the village of Baddeck, the shores of the Bras d’Or Lake reflect early morning sun on fishing boats and sailboats alike, and nearby Kidston Island, reached by a small summer ferry, holds a historic lighthouse and a sandy beach that invites relaxed afternoons by the water.

A standout stop on Cape Breton is the Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site in Baddeck. Here, visitors explore exhibits that show Bell’s wide range of work beyond the telephone, from a full-size Silver Dart airplane replica to hydrofoil experiments and towering tetrahedral kites. The site’s terraces and rooftop viewing deck frame Baddeck Bay and the Bell family’s Beinn Bhreagh estate across the water, while programs like “White Glove Tours” peek into rare artifacts with a guide’s stories.

For those drawn to wide horizons and rhythmic water, sailing and boat tours on the Bras d’Or Lake are a popular way to see the island from a different angle. Several outfitters operate seasonal trips that range from quiet daytime sails to sunset cruises, offering glimpses of island life along sandy coves and tree-lined shores. A short drive from Baddeck leads to Uisge Ban Falls Provincial Park, where a gentle trail winds through forest to reveal cascading falls, a refreshing detour that sits well beside the more open lake views found elsewhere on Cape Breton Island.
